Chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia, Permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna Title: The Imitation Games Russia’sconfrontation of the West stems from profound disagreements over the sources of political instability in the 21st century world. But while many are tempted to interpret Moscow’s policy as radical break in Its interest to use the West as a model. my argument is that the best way to make sense of Russia’s actions is to read them as an attempt to imitate what Kremlin has convinced itself to be “the real West”. In this logic Russia’s hybrid war in Ukraine is neither stunning strategic innovation nor return to Soviet playbook but reverse engineering that went wild.
